Infectious Diseases

We follow the Guidelines to exclusion from childcare as prescribed by the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Chicken pox     

Excluded until fully recovered or at least five days after the erup-tion first appears. Note that some remaining scabs are not a reason for continued exclusion.     

Any child with an immune defi-ciency (for example, leukae-mia) or receiving chemother-apy should be excluded for their own protection. Otherwise not excluded.     

Conjunctivitis     

Excluded until discharge from eyes has ceased.

Diarrhoea     

Excluded until discharge from eyes has ceased     

Not excluded     

Diphtheria     

Excluded until medical certificate recovery is received following at least two negative throat swabs, the first not less than 24 hours after finishing a course of antibi-otics and the other 48 hours later.     

Exclude family household of contacts until cleared to return by an appropriate health au-thority.     

Glandular Fever     

Exclusion is not necessary     

Not excluded     

Hand, foot & mouth     

Exclusion until completely well and all blisters have dried     

As organisms may still be in faeces, thorough hand washing and cleaning must be main-tained.     

Hepatitis A     

Exclude until a medical certificate of recovery is received , but not before seven days after the on-set of jaundice or illness

Hepatitis B     

Exclusion not necessary

HIV AIDS virus     

Exclusion is not necessary unless the child has a secondary infec-tion

Impetigo     

Exclusion until appropriate treat-ment has commenced. Sores on exposed surfaces must be cov-ered with a watertight dressing.

Leprosy     

Exclude until approval to return has been given by an appropriate health authority

Measles     

Exclude for at least four days af-ter onset of rash     

Immunised contacts not ex-cluded. Unimmunised contacts should be excluded until 14 days after the first day of ap-pearance of rash in the last case. If unimmunised contacts are vaccinated within 72 hours of their first contact with the first case they may return to care.     

Meningitis(Bacterial)    

Exclude until well

Mumps 

Exclude for nine days or until swelling goes down (which ever is sooner)

Poliomyelitis 

Exclude for at least 14 days from onset. Re-admit after receiving medical certificate of recovery

Re-admit the day after appropri-ate treatment has commenced.

Exclude unimmunised house-hold contacts aged less than 7 years for 14 days after the last exposure to infection or until they have taken 5 days of a 14 day course of antibiotics. (Exclude close child care con-tacts until they have com-menced antibiotics)
